ZX-9R improvement feature in Practical Sportsbikes

Post by araispeed » Mon Jan 20, 2020 11:37 am

Manuscript deadline for this ZX-9R article is this weekend

Hi guys

As you may have seen on a couple of other threads on here, Practical Sportsbikes magazine is putting together a feature about how best to modify ZX-9Rs (all models). We all know 9Rs are great road bikes, but all machines have their weaknesses and areas that benefit from improvement, so if you've modified your ZX-9R in any way (engine tuning, fuelling, suspension, removing weight, better braking etc) and it's improved your bike,we'd like to hear from you.

If that's you, please drop me an email at katana1170.jm@gmail.com. I will reply, even if it isn't straight away. The more useful info we can get, the more insightful the feature will be. Look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks

I, for one, am super excited about this project's possibilities. Come one, come all, ZX-9R community. Get what you've done with your ZX-9R recognized in a worldwide publication. :D

It's easy, just follow Jim's criteria above, do a little write up, proofread and submit it.

Thank you araispeed!

Bump^!!

Anyone contacted Jim about this? Hope so. How cool would it be to have the upcoming magazine on your coffee table and it's a picture of you and your bike. People will think it's a gag image, until you open it up and show them your bike's improvements contained in print.

Yup, that's me and my bike. eat^poporn 'No it isn't. How'd you do that?' :-k

I’ve had this email, I’d love to see what improvements people have made! I wouldn’t dare to get mine pictured until it’s nice and neat. Rid of some cheap Chinese parts to! Haha

'a feature about how best to modify ZX-9Rs'

Don't let current status of the bike prevent forwarding your information. It sounds like he's more after building a story about how people solved weaknesses, improved or altered/customized their ZX-9R(s). That makes for interesting copy. Readers get to see individual creativity. So even if you did it back in 2001 and had information and pictures about it, I think that would be the type of information he could piece together into a feature article.

He's going to probably want as much input as possible from B, C, E, & F model owners too, no matter how small your contribution. Let him decide if he can use it or not. The worst case would be that he couldn't or there's limited space for the feature and someone elses improvements won out.

If nobody chimes in for any reason, they'll probably have to scrap the feature. Let's make sure that doesn't happen. The ZX-9R deserves recognition as one of the most advanced carburetted sportbikes ever made. A streetbike without peer. Made for street riders and street riding. The last of the more upright seated position Ninja's in the sportbike genre.

Jim asked me a bunch of questions about ZX-9Rs in general, so if you don't want my version to win out in his article, you better get typing.
:rolf2
I wrote out about four pages and submitted it to him. Stuff about B and C models, which I know almost nothing about, other than what I've come to understand from members here. On the E and F model, which I have firsthand knowledge, I explained what were some of the bike's weaknesses and what I did to overcome them, even exploit them...as any of you have come to know. I was a bit brutal, in fact, about how awesome the ZX-9R E/F models can be when matched with a rider who exploits the bike's strengths. It's quick, but not the quickest. It's fast, but not the fastest. It handles, but doesn't handle the best. But on the street, it reigns unmatched.

Hope you all will like what I wrote, because from what I've seen on the Fb link it appears I may be the only person who's answered Jim's call for ZX-9R improvement information. :smt023 :D

Was there a deadline mentioned?
I plan on doing a cool little mod, but prolly not until May.

No deadline mentioned, so you may be okay. However, I'd assume the article is not a masterpiece of his life's work regarding the ZX-9R, being submitted as soon as he feels it is complete or complete enough.

My impression is that given the article relates to 'weaknesses and improvements' to a sportsbike that has been discontinued for 17 years, everything there is to know about it is already known. Waiting until May for that last improvement will probably have to be included as a letter to the editor regarding the article.

You should submit what you've done to improve you 9s weaknesses now and mention if there is a deadline. And if he has more questions, he can respond back to you for more information.

Well, that's the thing - I haven't really done anything.
Setting up the (stock) suspension to fit your needs and the usual maintenance don't count, as that's what you'd do with any other bike and tends to be very individual in nature.
What else aside from that - LED indicators? - pff..

An astute observer might even go as far as to assume that the lack of improvements (or the neccessity thereof) was the whole point to begin with.
..but hey, what do I know..

Very interesting fellas. too bad so far all I've done is chase down electrical gremlins with the coil pack short . Then the headlight issue with the button. And the added led bar which I dont think counts .lol

I would like to agree with obsidian about the bike. On the street shes just as fast as any super bike.not sure about the track ain't been there yet.hopefully this spring

It's not how fast your bike is. ITS how fast do you know how to ride it. I've left ducatis and R1's eating my dust on the highway. 2 steppin and rolling out like a bat outta hell😂.

Wheres yorkie ? He should be able to contribute more than enough info .

I have done stuff to my lardy arse 9rB , but I'm in the process of undoing all I done did ! sooooo when I've fitted the following to a different
clean title frame and swapped the bodywork from my 9rB that I'm still riding at present...
ZX 10R Gen iv wheels
Digi gps speedo
ZX 10R Gen iii forks and radial m/c clutch &brake
950 Hi comp pistons
Double spring valve train
Kawasaki kit factory manual suggestions, modded piston rods, heat shrouds, and general fettling of castings and transmission.
ZX14 or ZX10R Rear caliper
Harris stuff,rear sets,zorst, adjustable clip ons....possibly adjustable headstock :-k
ZX10R Titanium header zorst
Bespoke mid-pipe
ZX7R P oil sump
Modded oil galleries and feeds
A shit load of bespoke alloy or Titanium fixings
Modded and lightened frame extra internal alloy bracing with 2k foam filling.

I will let you know when I'm finished.!...BUT i'M KEEN ON SWITCHING IN AN ELECTRIC MOTOR/BATTERIES ON THE 9RB CHASSIS I WILL HAVE AS
LEFTOVERS.
The past posts I have put up are in the public domain so feel free to copy pics I have put up but best not to quote me on the mods as
actual improvements,as some are done to accommodate my disability of having a busted spine and nerve damage...My 9R B suits me and me alone.
